No more Mr. Rice Guy: 7 spicy sushi bakes to try if you can handle the heat

If you’re trying to fit in, how will you stand out?

This is probably the mantra behind the creation of the sushi bake. With a lot of people bored and locked at home, the sushi bake is anything but ordinary.

For now, you probably understand the hype behind this deconstructed-sushi-eaten-samgyup-style, but replace the lettuce with nori.

However, when things trend and the world gets saturated with the said thing, what used to be inspired will just be meh. Sushi bakes are a dime in a dozen now but to make them interesting, some cooks who have struck gold on this ensemble of cooked rice with vinegar, bits of seafood (usually shrimp, tuna, scallops, and/or imitation crab), and creamy filling (usually a blend of cream cheese and Japanese mayo) added a twist— heat.

So, if you can handle the heat, here are five spicy sushi bakes to surprise your taste buds with.

7. The Weekend Sushi (@theweekendsushi)

The Weekend Sushi has one of the thickest toppings in the sushi bake arena. Almost 2/3 of it is its creamy and slightly spicy topping which can either be Ebi Kani or Scallop Kani Aburi. Regular variants are also available for the weak. LOL.

6. Sushify (@sushifyyy)

Sushify Spicy Tuna Sushi Bake

This is the Spicy Tuna Sushi Bake from Sushify. The lingering heat is contrasted with the vinegar sushi rice, making it a treat for those who like things hot. It’s made with Flakes of Tuna, creamy mayo, and a special secret ingredient that gives it a crunchy twist! Best to try it out to find out what it is.

5. The Sushi Bake House (@thesushibakehouse)

Chef Jose Miguel Gianan has been cooking for 15 years. He loves the culture that food brings and especially loves when his creative juices kick in. With sushi bake, he saw an opportunity to play around with his creativity and created various standard flavors and playful flavors. Their spicy variants – the Sriracha Teriyaki Kani Salmon Aburi and the Spicy Kani Salmon Aburi – are absolute must-tries. Top tip: get a starter trio of 3 small trays of 3 different flavors for only Php1,500!
