NO, Japan will NOT pay half of your travel expenses

There have been lots of rumors that Japan will pay for your travel expenses if you’re going to the country. Unfortunately, this is not true.

The Japan Tourism Agency dispelled these rumors and clarified its Go To Travel campaign, which many tourists thought would pay for half of their travel expenses.

According to the agency, this initiative will only include domestic travel within the country after the COVID-19 pandemic. It will only apply to Japanese tourists traveling within the Land of the Rising Sun.

The tourism agency made this clear in a series of tweets:

Hiroshi Tabata, the head of Japan’s tourism agency, was quoted last week by several media outlets as saying that they aimed to launch the Go To Travel campaign after COVID-19 was brought under control, in July at the earliest.

The proposal will include the release of travel vouchers for lodging and dining, up to a maximum of 20,000 yen (about PhP 9,500) per person, per stay, according to a budget document released by Japan’s economy ministry.

“Currently, this means initiatives such as this will be aimed at people living in Japan only, and not overseas visitors. Support will be offered to cover a proportion of domestic travel expenses,” a spokesperson for the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) said to the UK’s Independent newspaper.

There you go. If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.
