Teenagers Are Now Pledging To Not Have Children Because Of Climate Change

#NoFutureNoChildren is a movement that aims to battle climate change by having individuals refuse to consider having children until governments worldwide take the appropriate actions. Their website cites 5,356 people as having taken the pledge so far, which reads: “I pledge not to have children until I am sure my government will ensure a safe future for them.”

In a world where people are continuously being displaced because of natural disasters, where breathable air is becoming a scarcity, and there are only about 10 years left to reverse such consequences the idea of having children is becoming less and less popular.

Emma Lim, the 18-year-old founder of #NoFutureNoChildren, explains on the website her own rationale behind the commitment: “Because even though I want to have children more than almost anything- what kind of a mother would I be if I brought a baby into a world where I couldn’t make sure they were safe?”

“I launched the pledge because I wanted other people to understand how the fear of climate is so unquestioned in my generation. It’s something everybody feels,” Lim shared with Insider. “Where in my parent’s or grandparent’s generation, believing in climate change is often a matter of opinion and not survival.”

The movement sets a clear standard for world governments to meet before people ought to consider having children again. It demands a comprehensive plan for the earth to stay below 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming. This number is based on a 2018 United Nations report which revealed that the earth has warmed 1 degree Celsius since the 19th Century and that an additional .5 or 1 degree could be disastrous.
