Netizen Buys Stolen iPhone 5S to Return It to Its Rightful Owner

Now here’s a story you don’t hear all the time. We recently posted an article about an alleged phone thief who asked the rightful owner of his phone to delete her iCloud account as a Christmas gift for him. (I know, right? Wow.) Well, this article is the complete opposite of that!

Netizen Jonathan Rebua shared a story with us that happened last year where he returned a stolen iPhone 5S. He didn’t just find it and return it, though. Apparently, he bought it from someone when he realised the phone was stolen and pretended that he was going to take the phone apart for the parts. When he got the phone, though, he contacted the rightful owner in order to return it. Read the full story here:

Netizen Buys Stolen iPhone 5S to Return It to Its Rightful Owner

[Rough translation: Someone asked me to unlock a genuine black Apple iPhone 5S 64GB with a passcode. The customer asked me to open the lock and I told him that I could, but only after he restores it through his iCloud. He said yes, so I assumed the unit was really his.

When he couldn’t, I said, “Oh, your iPhone 5S is stolen, bro. The only one who can open it is the real owner.” After that, I told him I’d just buy the phone for cheap, so I could use the spare parts. He agreed. After I paid for the phone, he left and I tried to contact the number stated in the iCloud, but I couldn’t reach it. So I kept the phone first and saved the number of the phone’s real owner.

After about a month, I tried calling the number of the real owner again. The phone rang, but no one answered, so I checked on WhatsApp. I saw that he was online, so I messaged him. I told him I had his iPhone 5S, explained the situation and told him that I wanted to return it. He told me the location where he lost it and I sent him a picture of the iPhone and iCloud account. He was very happy because it turns out I contacted him right after his birthday. He said he would be back in two weeks to pick up his iPhone 5S. So, if you ever have an iPhone or iPad with an iCloud, sell it to me, so I can return them to their rightful owners.

How nice is that? We definitely need more good samaritans like Jonathan nowadays.
