Incoming ML party-list Representative Leila de Lima, whom Lustre endorsed in the recent midterm elections, expressed full support for her decision to take legal action.
“We at ML Partylist express full support for Nadine Lustre as she files a complaint for violation of the Safe Spaces Act in response to the relentless and malicious attacks she has endured,” de Lima said in a statement.
“This is a necessary step in a time when social media is being used to silence voices that speak for justice and reform. Ginagamit ang mga plataporma para buwagin ang makabuluhang diskurso at palitan ito ng galit at paninira (Platforms are being used to dismantle meaningful discourse and replace it with hatred and defamation).”
She reiterated that Lustre’s case is a stand for truth and accountability, adding, “We support Nadine. Her case is a stand for truth and accountability. Make no mistake: we will push back against this kind of behavior. Hindi ito katanggap-tanggap (This is not acceptable). Hindi ito dapat palampasin (This should not be ignored).”
The Safe Spaces Act (Republic Act No. 11313), also known as the “Bawal Bastos Law,” prevents and addresses gender-based sexual harassment in streets, public spaces, workplaces, educational institutions, and online platforms. It provides protective measures for individuals—regardless of gender—from acts like catcalling, stalking, lewd remarks, and online harassment.
