Beloved Sanrio characters My Melody and Kuromi are set to headline a charming stop-motion series this year!

Celebrating My Melody’s 50th anniversary and Kuromi’s 20th anniversary, Netflix will bring these cute characters together in a whimsical adventure in Mariland.
In a short clip posted by Netflix, My Melody is delighted with a cupcake right in front of her while Kuromi looks annoyed in a hot pink chair.
Pui Pui Molcar director Tomoki Misato will be spearheading the project.
“This momentous project motivated all of us to come together, take on various challenges, and push the envelope with stop-motion,” director Tomoki told Netflix Tudum. “I hope everyone will enjoy this exciting story set in our handcrafted Mariland, the thrilling action that pushes the limits of stop-motion, and, of course, the cute and dynamic characters.”
Meanwhile, award-winning playwright, screenwriter, and Sanrio fan Suko Nemoto revealed that the script was written during the pandemic: “Because of the pandemic, I couldn’t meet with Director Misato or the producers in person. But we connected remotely each week, carefully building this together. ”
“Having My Melody and Kuromi speak lines I wrote felt like a reward for me as a writer,” she shared. “The project is filled with love for the world of My Melody, beloved by people of all ages. I believe everyone, from adults to children, will have favorite scenes and lines.”
My Melody and Kuromi are well-loved characters from the popular Sanrio universe. In the recent 2024 character rankings, Kuromi claimed the third spot while My Melody clinched the sixth spot.
Debuted in 1975, My Melody is perceived as a cheerful and straightforward girl. Meanwhile, Kuromi, who debuted in 2005, is seen as My Melody’s “self-proclaimed rival and doppelgänger.”
Despite the troublemaker persona, Kuromi is girly and loves writing in her diary and reading romantic short stories in her free time.
My Melody & Kuromi is coming to Netflix in July 2025.
