On July 29, Variety reported that the sequel is currently being developed by Sony Pictures, which has tapped Celine Song—the writer-director behind “Past Lives” and “Materialists.”
Previously, Dermot Mulroney, the lead male protagonist in the 1997 film, revealed to the New York Post that “there is talk of a sequel.”
However, details about the sequel, such as cast, premiere date, and more, are yet to be revealed.
The popular romantic-comedy movie centers around best friends Julianne Potter (played by Julia Roberts) and Michael O’Neal (played by Mulroney), who promised to marry each other if they remain unmarried at the age of 28. However, Julianne realizes that she has feelings towards her best friend, who is about to marry a young woman named Kimmy Wallace (played by Cameron Diaz).
The film, which garnered $299 million at the box office, was nominated for an Academy Award and three Golden Globe Awards.
