When the national government introduced the enhanced community quarantine in Luzon due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases, one of the provisions is the suspension of mass transportation. According to Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles, “the idea is to keep everybody in home quarantine.” Only those with private vehicles can venture out, but only for necessities such as going to the grocery, buying medicine, or for medical professionals to go to work.

The question now is, how do people with no cars go out to buy necessities?

Muntinlupa is solving that for its citizens by launching a fleet of e-jeepneys. According to city mayor Jimmy Fresnedi on Facebook, “there will be six (6) e-jeepneys available for deployment. Four (4) of these e-jeeps will be deployed at Muntinlupa City Public Market going to Tunasan (Muntinlupa-San Pedro Boundary) and vice-versa. The remaining two (2) e-jeeps will be deployed at Muntinlupa National High School — Plaza Central route.”

He added, “these e-jeeps will observe social distancing, as part of the guidelines on Enhanced Community Quarantine. People are advised to stay indoors with exemptions on going to stores providing basic needs such as drug stores and groceries.”
