Motorcycle taxis to be considered “illegal” starting next week

Motorcycle taxis will be considered “illegal” starting next week, according to DOTr-technical working group chief Antonio Gardiola. The DOTr’s technical working group terminated their study on motorcycle taxis as alternative public transportation.

With this, the extension of the pilot run of Angkas and new players JoyRide and Move It operating as transport network companies to cater to the commuting public will be discontinued. These services will be deemed “illegal.”

Gardiola said that they are ending the study without any conclusion to their working data. He also said that they will be submitting a report to the Congress regarding this a week from now, which is a similar version of the report they provided to Senator Grace Poe.

Poe serves as the chairman of the Committee on Public Services.

“Tinitigil po namin yung programa kasi hindi po kami makagalaw. Marami pong legal impediments along the way. Yung pagrerequire po namin ng guidelines, hindi po sinusunod ng Angkas,” he told Poe.

Gardiola mentioned that DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade has endorsed this recommendation.
