Charlie Dizon’s Best Actress win was one of the trophies Fan Girl won at the Metro Manila Film Festival’s Gabi ng Parangal. Momoland’s Nancy McDonie was one of the celebrities who congratulated Dizon for her win.
On Instagram Stories, McDonie shared a screenshot from the film with the caption, “Best actress.”
She added, “I am so proud and impressed with your performance. You are amazing, Charlie. You deserve best actress. Congratulations.”
Dizon and McDonie have known each other since 2011 when they started out as co-trainees in South Korea. In an episode of Rise Here, Rise Now, McDonie called Dizon her “best friend in the Philippines.” McDonie became a K-pop idol, while Dizon had issues related to her visa status. It all seemed to work out because Dizon is now an award-winning actress!
Apart from the nod, Fan Girl was recognized for best picture, director for Tonet Jadaone, actor for Paulo Avelino, editing, cinematography, sound, and screenplay. It won eight awards out of nine nominations.
According to its official description, Fan Girl follows “a high school fan girl’s obsession with huge celebrity Paulo Avelino – 1⁄2 of the country’s most popular love team.”
She follows him home and “ends up in an unfamiliar house in an unfamiliar place with an unfamiliar Paulo Avelino, the idol she thought she knew from head to foot, heart, and soul. They say, never meet your heroes, and she finds out exactly why.”
Fan Girl premiered at the Tokyo International Film Festival and competed at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia.
It is currently available for streaming as one of the entries of this year’s MMFF. The festival will run until January 7, 2020. The films can be viewed on Upstream.ph.
