The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Metro Manila Council approved the higher fines on illegal parking in August. The implementation was originally set on December 19 but it was moved to today, January 7.

From the new MMDA regulation,  Regulation Number 18-008, the illegal parking fines for attended vehicles will increase from P200 to P1,000 while for unattended vehicles it will be P500 to P2,000.

MMDA General Manager Jojo Garcia said that the delay of the implementation was to give the MMDA enough time to fix the ticketing and collection system. Additionally, he said that “it’s Christmas season anyway.”

Based on the new regulation, those who will be penalized may be given traffic violation tickets up to twice a day, with a 3-hour interval between issuances. Therefore, a driver can be penalized a maximum of P4,000 a day for illegal parking.

Moreover, those who will be penalized may also receive tickets for obstructing public roads with a fine of P1,000.

According to Garcia, cars caught illegally parked and without plate numbers will be automatically towed.
