Haters Gonna Hate: Michael Pacquiao Gets Nominated for Breakthrough Artist of the Year

Love him or hate him, Michael Pacquiao, the son of celebrity boxer Manny Pacquiao, has made his mark in the local music scene.

Michael has just been nominated as the country’s Breakthrough Artist of the Year by popular local radio station Wish 107.5 for its 6th Annual Wish Music Awards, only a few months since Michael debuted his first-ever rap single “Hate.”

“I thank the Lord most of all and I thank @wish1075 for giving me the opportunity,” the 18-year-old said in a tweet. “Bronze Wishclusive Elite Circle | Nominee for Wish 107.5 Breakthrough artist of the year‼️”

The tweet included photos of himself holding up the Wish 107.5 Wish Music Awards plaque and his framed Bronze Wishclusive Elite Circle.

“Thank you everyone for the support and I love you all,” he added. “Thank you for listening to my music.”

Michael is nominated in the category alongside indie-pop band The Vowels They Orbit and Zild Benitez of IV of Spades.

He went viral last July when some of the songs he recorded and posted on YouTube started circulating online, which left Filipinos surprised by his talent. He then got to show off his rapping skills on the Wish 107.5 Bus as he performed “Hate” off of his forthcoming debut album “Dreams.”

Even iconic Pinoy rapper Chito Miranda of Parokya ni Edgar couldn’t help but share his awe of the young Pacquiao’s performance. “Ayus din yung tugtugan ng anak ni Pacquiao a…nakakabilib,” Chito had said in a tweet. “Orig nya ba yun? Kung oo, sobrang astig. Kung hindi, ok lang…ang galing nya pa rin.

[Translation: “The music of Pacquiao’s son is really cool…I’m impressed. Is it an original? If it is, it’s so cool. If not, it’s okay…he’s still amazing.”]
