Residents and students of Manila can now look forward to faster and free public Wi-Fi coming their way, all thanks to Mayor Isko Moreno.

In a move to make Manila a “city of convenience”  and a “smart city”, the Manila government has signed a deal to build 34 Wi-Fi hotspot terminals in various locations around Manila, particularly at the University Belt. This came after an agreement last August with telecommunications network PLDT Inc. to provide free Wi-Fi in six areas around Manila. Smart, the mobile arm of PLDT, will be the provider.

Last Wednesday, March 4, Mayor Isko and the head of the Department of Engineering and Public Works went to the areas where these hotspots are located— along España Blvd, in front of the University of Santo Tomas, and even as far as the Quezon City border— for an ocular visit.

According to the Facebook post of the Manila Public Information office, these Wi-Fi hotspot terminals will be modeled after the ones in Manhattan, New York. And just like the first Wi-Fi hotspot kiosk that was launched at the Bonifacio Shrine near the Manila City Hall last August, these towers will feature a charging port for mobile phones and can be used for landline calls.

Aside from free Wi-Fi access, additional CCTVs will also be installed around the U-belt to ensure the safety of students.
