It was back in March, on Rico Blanco’s birthday, that the public first got wind about what seemed like a romance brewing between the 23-year-old actress and the 48-year-old singer-songwriter. Maris Racal took to Instagram then to post a birthday greeting for Rico, together with a video of them cozily singing an acoustic duet. In May, they finally admitted to being in a relationship, and the internet—as expected—had feelings about it. Many were surprised because of the 25 years age gap between the two.

In a recent interview with entertainment site Pep.ph, Maris opened up about the public’s opinion on their relationship. “I don’t know, it’s their own opinion naman,” she said. “Maybe to their world ganun yung age gap or relationship. But we’re okay naman with negative comments, hindi kami naba-bother.”
Aside from saying that she and Rico are unfazed by negative comments, she also shared that they are overwhelmed with the support they’re getting. “I think, yung reaction ng people and yung support nila for us is very overwhelming. It’s something that I really did not expect. Kasi akala ko maraming magagalit, but baligtad yung nangyari.”
When asked about the beginnings of their relationship, Maris revealed that it was her mom that she first told about her new beau. “Of course, una talagang sinabihan ko, I mean, una sa listahan ko ang mommy ko.” The actress shared that her mom was supportive and understanding, as was the rest of her family.
Maris said, “Kasi, medyo hindi typical yung relationship namin. Pinakauna ko talagang sinabihan si Mama and, surprisingly, naintindihan niya. Wala, inintindi niya lang din and, parang wala, hindi siya big conversation sa family.”
