According to the Los Angeles Times, his manager, Jaime Jaramillo Espinosa, stated that Masalva “began to feel internal discomfort and pain which increased by the day” two days after arriving in Dubai from the Philippines.
The actor underwent emergency surgery on March 26 after the doctors discovered the bacteria. The following day, the infection spread to his lungs, leading to him being placed in a medically induced coma.
“On the other hand, his respirator was lowered to 80%, which means that his lungs are reacting,” Espinosa added.
Masalva remains in critical, but stable condition. His family has launched a GoFundMe fundraiser to cover his treatment costs, which currently total $1,068,068 (approximately 61 million) as of this writing.
He visited the Philippines on March 14 and even shared snaps from his trip on Instagram.
