There’s good news for Manny Pacquiao even if he lost against Yordenis Ugas on August 21 (August 22, Philippine time).

According to Gilberto Mendoza, the president of the World Boxing Association, Pacquiao will be recognized as Champion for Life. Mendoza reportedly said this a few hours before Pacquiao’s fight against Ugas, and that he will receive this recognition, whatever the outcome.

He told Pacquiao, “This is the 100 years of the WBA, the centennial year, you’re gonna be a Champion for Life. I’ll have a belt made and we’ll come with a resolution later.”

The president added that he will be visiting the Philippines in September to officially bestow the title to Pacquiao.

Mendoza added, “I had to do it personally, Manny, because you behaved like a real gentleman and taught lessons to others. I hope to see you soon in Manila with the belt and everything else.”

Pacquiao is an eight-division world champion yet was given the title of “champion in recess” because of inactivity due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
