Showtune queens, we have great news: Mamma Mia!, the hit musical featuring ABBA songs that was adapted into film in 2008, will be getting a sequel called Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!
There’s no word what the sequel will be about, but it will continue the story of Donna (Meryl Streep), who is confronted at her daughter Sophie’s (Amanda Seyfried) wedding by three men, who are wondering if they are the father. The three men are played by Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgård.
Reports say that they are expecting the original cast and will feature ABBA songs not used in the original film, along with old favorites.
The film had mixed reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes saying that “this jukebox musical is full of fluffy fun but rough singing voices and a campy tone might not make you feel like ‘you can dance’ the whole 90 minutes.”
ABBA members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus have signed on as executive producers and will provide music and lyrics, but there’s no word how Catherine Johnson, the writer of the Broadway musical, will fit in.
The sequel to Mamma Mia! will be released on July 20, 2018, a decade after the original film.
