Madonna May Face PH Ban After Controversial Flag Stint

Madonna isn’t Madonna after all, without ruffling a few feathers.

After the pop icon’s 2-day concert in Manila, the queen of reinvention left behind a string of controversies, including calls to boycott her concert over allegations of “taunting Mother Mary” according to Lipa archbishop Ramon Arguelles.

Now, Madonna is facing the possibility of being banned from the country after “disrespecting” the Philippine flag!

According to local reports, Teodoro Atienza, chief of the Heraldry Section of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) said that Madonna and her team may face a ban from the country due to violation of Republic Act No. 8491, which stipulates the code of the national flag, coat-of-arms, anthem and motto. Under Section 34, the law prohibits “wearing the flag in whole or in part as a costume or uniform”.

Madonna used the Philippine flag as part of her costume for her “Holiday” performance during the Rebel Heart Tour. The pop star also allowed the flag to touch the floor, which is another violation.

The NHCP official also said that the Rebel Heart Tour concert producers may also be held liable even if they were unaware of the laws.

This is not the first time the country has faced a flag-related controversy this year — just recently, high school students of the University of the East were expelled following a video of them sweeping the floor with the Philippine flag.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think a ban is the proper solution to address this?
