‘Lucifer’ introduces next season’s villain — Here’s everything we know about him

Netflix just dropped the trailer for Lucifer‘s 5th season and it looks like we’re in for a wild ride.

Coming off the show’s 4th season fans were left to anticipate the king of Hell’s return to earth. While at first, the trailer makes it appear as if we get that pay-off immediately we quickly see that things are not as they seem.

Instead of it being Lucifer back on earth, we get an entirely new character impersonating the fallen angel: his identical twin brother, Michael. This is, of course, the archangel Michael who plays a titular role in the Abrahamic faiths.

(Lucifer Might Be Getting More Seasons, After All)

In the Christian faith, he is best known for his acts in the Book of Revelation wherein he leads a battle against Satan and eventually casts him out of hell. This could give us a hint to his origin in the show but could just as easily divert from it, given the trailer paints quite a different view of the archangel than what is typical.

The trailer shows Michael as a vengeful angel, aiming to “take” Lucifer’s life on earth as his own. It sets his character up as the next season’s villain, giving him a penchant for anger and violence. This depiction strays from the comic’s version which has Michael and Lucifer as 2 sides of the same coin.

We also learn that Michael is quite powerful, beating Amenadiel in hand-to-hand combat. Amenadiel himself comments on Michael’s skill, saying “he’s stronger than you think.”

The official synopsis for season 5 reads:

Lucifer (Ellis), bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, resigns his throne and abandons his kingdom for the gorgeous, shimmering insanity of Los Angeles, where he gets his kicks helping the LAPD…and the savvy detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German) in particular.

In the stunning fifth season of Lucifer, the stakes are higher than ever. Secrets will be revealed, beloved characters will die, and we’ll finally get an answer to the question, ‘will they or won’t they?
