LOOK: ‘Welcome to the Philippines, Province of China’ tarp pops in Metro Manila footbridge

Photos of a tarp that says “Welcome to the Philippines, Province of China” that was seen on a footbridge in Metro Manila are going viral on social media. Even former Solicitor General Florin Hilbay shared a photo of the said tarp on social media.

Hilbay captioned the tweet with:

NOT FUNNY.

On this day, July 12, we commemorate our victory in Philippines v. China.

On Metro Manila footbridges, these tarps suddenly appear.

MMDA, LGUs, and citizens should immediately take these down.

Apparently, this incident coincides with the second anniversary of an arbitral tribunal ruling that China’s sweeping nine-dash line claim over the South China Sea has no legal basis. At present, the country has chosen to lay low on the ruling and focus on nurturing better political and economic relations with China.

Here is another shot of the tarp that is making rounds on Facebook.

It is not clear who installed the tarps. It is also unclear what is the reason for doing so.
