August was a special month for stargazers as we witnessed two supermoons in one month. A supermoon is when a full moon’s orbit is closest to the Earth.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, or PAGASA, this means that the moon will appear slightly brighter and larger than usual.

The first took place on August 2, when the moon was 357,417.847 kilometers away from the Earth at 1:52 PM.

This was followed on August 30, when it was 357,289.429 kilometers away at 11:54 PM.

When two full moons closest in their orbit to the Earth occur in the same month, the second is called a super blue moon. This is where the term “once in a blue moon” comes from, which means “not very often” or ”very rarely.” The next super blue moon will be in 2037.

Jazz A., a medicine student, witnessed the super blue moon and shared this photo with us he took using his smartphone. He used a Google Pixel 7 mounted on a telescope. This shot was taken in Zamboanga City at 8 PM:
