The world of art is a complex place to traverse. Art can disturb or inspire and it’s not always conventionally beautiful. To be a great artist means to practice and to really hone your craft. One artist in particular shows this very discipline: Gian Miroe.
Because of the nature of the art world, it can be difficult to break through and have your own solo shows and exhibits to really display your mastery of the craft. But Gian has achieved plenty in his short time as an artist–he was a Finalist at the 2015 National Shell Art Competition and his works received attention in competitions like Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC) Calendar Competition, UST Annual Interschool On-the-spot Painting Competition and Metrobank Art and Design Excellence (MADE). He has also joined in numerous group exhibitions in premiere galleries such as Ronac, Art Cube Gallery, West Gallery, Art Verité, and museums like UP Vargas Museum and Pinto Art Museum.
“Bata pa lang ako mahilig na ako sa art. Pero in terms of painting, na-inspire ako mag-art nung nanalo ako sa isang art competition sa school namin (Technological University of the Philippines) tapos kinuha akong apprentice ni Sir Lynyrd Paras. ‘Dun na nagsimula lahat,” he shares with us about how he began to take art seriously.
The creation of something is also very different. Some are energized, some feel cathartic, others use it as therapy. “Pag gumagawa ako, I feel relieved. Parang therapy ko na yung paggawa kapag minsan magulo ka na,” he echoes.
When it comes to inspiration, he talks about how he gathers inspiration from himself or the environment around him. “May makukuha kang mga idea at konsepto sa mga bagay na nakakaimpluensya hindi man sayo kahit tumitingin ka lang sa mga tao at mga bagay na nakapaligid sayo.”
Art, for Gian, is the manifestation of happiness and pain, a neverending process. And we hope he never stops. What a talent!
Keep at it, Gian! We wish you luck with your 3rd Solo Exhibition on August 22, 2020 at Art Verité Gallery – Serendra BGC. See you guys there!
