Many of us are adventurous eaters who get excited when we hear of people and restaurants adding twists to our favorites. For those who enjoy unique flavors, we have something for you: we found a cafe/restaurant that serves a mix of classic and unusual pastries. How unusual? Care to try their Guava Cake, Salted Egg Cheesecake, and Sago’t Gulaman Coffee?
The place that offers this is Kuya J, the classic Filipino restaurant known for their crispy pata, kare-kare, and halo-halo. They recently opened a cafe that offers snacks and coffee perfect for breakfast or meryenda.
Some of their must-trys are the Guava Cake, which adds the refreshing flavor to a soft and fluffy base; the Salted Egg Cheesecake for its rich and sharp taste; and the Tablea Cake, which is perfect for chocolate fans.
Kuya J Café + Restaurant also offers pastries. Our favorite in the menu is the Ensaymada, a large pastry overflowing with butter and cheese. We also enjoyed the delicate flavor of the Pan de Coco, which brought back memories of our childhood.
The Pianono and Calamansi Muffin are perfect for those who enjoy something light. The sponge cake of the Pianono is pillowy-soft, while the filling is subtle. The Calamansi Muffin is tart yet delicate.
We recommend the Banana Muffin and the Banana Loaf if you are a fan of the fruit. We are, so we definitely loved it!
Of course, cakes and pastries are best enjoyed with a cup of coffee. Kuya J also reinvented the iced coffee genre with the Sago’t Gulaman Coffee and the Tablea Coffee. Drinking the Sago’t Gulaman Coffee was a fun experience because of the abundance of jelly and the strong flavor of coffee. The Tablea Coffee can deceive you with the chocolate taste but don’t forget the caffeine! These two are perfect hot afternoons when you want to stay alert and be refreshed at the same time.
