LOOK The Power Rangers Gets a New Look for Reboot

Hey, even superheroes need a makeover, and it’s now the Power Rangers turn to get a wardrobe update.

In the upcoming reboot of the Japanese Super Sentai turned American Power Rangers, five high school kids morph into color-coded superheroes to fight Rita Repulsa. The reboot will star Becky G as Yellow Ranger Trini, Ludi Lin as Black Ranger Zack, Dacre Montgomery as Red Ranger Jason, Naomi Scott as Pink Ranger Kimberly, and RJ Cyler as Blue Ranger Billy. Elizabeth Banks will play Repulsa.

The suits in the new movie will be a translucent extraterrestrial armor that crystallizes around their bodies, a new take on the spandex one worn by actors in the past. According to director Dean Israelite, “These suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit.”

Production designer Andrew Menzies adds, “Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made. You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans.”

Even the cast is into it. Becky G. says, “It’s the coolest costume ever. I’m gonna wear it for Halloween for, like, five years.”

The film will premiere on March 24, 2017.
