For most ’90s kids, the Rugrats was a defining part of their childhood. The Nickelodeon cartoon followed a group of babies as they dealt with the world around them. It may sound simple when you put it like that, but the misadventures of Tommy Pickles, his brother Dill, and their friends Chuckie, Phil and Lil, Angelica, Susie, and Kimi are pretty funny.
A sudden wave of nostalgia hit everyone when Celeste, a Tumblr user decided to imagine the kids as grown-ups. In the illustration, the kids grow up to be hipsters, with cat shirts, a beard, an undercut, and really short shorts (for Phil). However, Rugrats storyboard artist Eric Molinsky said that that’s not how they grow up to look like.
The artist wrote an essay on Studio 360, saying that the interpretation of the Rugrats kids are both annoying and inaccurate. He said, “The Rugrats did not all grow up to be fashion models or self-confident hipsters. Especially not Chuckie. They probably grew up to be average, if not slightly lumpy-looking people—just like their parents.”
