Lav Diaz is set to step on the international stage again as his film, Essential Truths of the Lake, will compete in the prestigious Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland.
The film stars John Loyd, Hazel Orencio, Shaina Magdayao, Bart Guingona, and Agot Isidro.
It acts as a prequel to When The Waves Are Gone, which premiered at the Venice International Film Festival last year.
Here’s how IMDB described When The Waves Are Gone: “Lt. Hermes Papauran, one of the best investigators of the Philippines, is in a deep moral crossroad, being a witness to his institution’s being a party to a murderous anti-drug campaign, which is spearheaded by no less than the president of the country, Rodrigo Duterte.”
In the film, the atrocities affect Lt. Papauran physically and spiritually. IMDB added that “A dark past haunts him and it has eventually and literally come back for a reckoning, for a closure.”
Essential Truths of the Lake will compete in the festival’s main competition, also known as the Concorso internazionale.
According to Locarno, the main competition “is where the best forms of contemporary cinema converge, in accordance with the history and tradition of the Locarno Film Festival.”
The festival is known for “the most daring, avant-garde, irreverent and innovative forms of films โ screened in their uncut, uncensored versions.”
This year’s festival will run from August 2 to 12, 2023.
