LANY Talks ‘Mama’s Boy,’ the Future of Music, and What They Miss Most About the Philippines

Nearly two years since “Malibu Nights,” LANY is gearing up for an all-new album release, “Mama’s Boy.”

Recently, When In Manila got a chance to talk to LANY’s frontman, Paul Klein, and learn more about what to expect from the album, among many other things.

In a statement that the band post on its Instagram prior to the premiere of its first single “good guys” in May, “Mama’s Boy” is an ode to the members’ roots, a love letter to their hometowns, a thank you note for the place that brought them to where they are now—gracing the top of the charts, touring the world, and making music after music.

Coincidentally, it couldn’t have come at a better time. With all of us across the world having spent a quarter of the year self-quarantining at home amid confusing events, we have gained a renewed appreciation for the places we’ve grown up in and the people who matter most in our lives. It’s the kind of feeling that LANY hopes to amplify with “Mama’s Boy.”

“Music is powerful and it makes you feel better,” Paul said. “With all my favorite music growing up, there really isn’t an ‘overall message.’ I just always listened and felt better, felt more inspired. They made me want to be a better person and live a better life, to take more risks and have more adventures. We just want to elevate that experience with our album.”

At the same time, Paul expressed sadness that the one thing that meant so much to him, which is “the ability to gather people in one room for one reason: music,” unfortunately won’t be the same anymore.

“I miss the Philippines, I miss the world, I miss my friends, I miss being on tour,” Paul admitted.

He may not know what the future of music looks like and how the concert experience will change, he remains optimistic that this period of uncertainty won’t last forever. “As long as we’ve gained a sense of security and know how to move forward,” he added.
