In a game of tag, the rules are simple: do not get caught by the “it.” Somehow, Filipino kids found a way to grant momentary immunity by yelling a magic word: “TAYMPERS!” Breaking down the term, we can interpret it simply as “time first” (as in “give me time off first”) or “time freeze” (to stop time in the context of the game). It could be that they have to catch their breath or even use the move to throw off the “it,” but for whatever reason, this declaration of rest is a trump card to survive the game. The same sentiment can be said for the fast-paced world we live in today—how a form of pause can be just what saves us from getting lost in our own ways.

Kuwentong Karilyo: TAYMPERS is a collection of original vignettes exploring the past, present, and future through shadowplay and contemporary dance in a theatrical performance. Inspired by quips and thoughts shared by the Benildean community during Art Break XX, this presentation is a Karilyo recital featuring SBRDC-Contemporary.
