Knives Out 2 Is Officially Happening…But It’s Not Exactly A Sequel

Rian Johnson’s murder-mystery Knives Out is officially getting a second installment. After garnering both commercial and critical acclaim, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer confirmed that a follow-up Benoit Blanc mystery had the studio’s green light.

However, it won’t be a direct sequel to the mystery of the Harlan Thrombey family. Instead, Johnson’s second Knives Out film will be a completely new mystery for Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc to solve. In this way, Johnson aims to pursue a free-form type of series similar to the detective novels Agatha Christie wrote.

“In my mind, I don’t even think of it in terms of like a sequel…” Johnson explained to Sirius XM. “Ever since we started working on this, I was like, look, if we can keep this going, the same way Agatha Christie wrote a bunch of Poirot novels. I mean, do that with Blanc and keep making more mysteries. Whole new cast, whole new location, whole new mystery. It’s just another Benoit Blanc mystery, and it seems like there’s just so many different things you can do with it, you know? It seems like it’d be really fun.”

Given that, not much information on the sequel has been released aside from the fact that it will be happening. There are predictions it will be released as early as 2021 or 2022 based on both Johnson and Craig’s free schedules but nothing has been confirmed.
