It’s official. Kanye West will now be known simply as Ye.
The court has approved the American rapper’s request to formally change his name to those two letters–no middle or last name.
News of his decision to legally file for the name change first spread in August 2021 citing “personal reasons.” Ye has been calling himself by that nickname for years now, but only recently sought the approval of a judge for him to legitimately use it.
He has also notably used the term as the title of his eighth studio album back in 2018. In an interview with Boy Boy at the time, he explained: “I believe ‘ye’ is the most commonly used word in the Bible, and in the Bible it means ‘you’.”
“So I’m you, I’m us, it’s us,” he continued. “It went from Kanye, which means the only one, to just Ye – just being a reflection of our good, our bad, our confused, everything. The album is more of a reflection of who we are.”
Meanwhile, his ex-wife Kim Kardashian and their four children, North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm, all continue to bear his former surname West.
