KAMAO on Wheels 2017: An Outreach Program for the Aeta Community in Zambales

By Raffi Santana

Kamao on Wheels is heading to Alao, Botolan, Zambales! As with numerous poverty-stricken communities around the Philippines, many of the Aeta families in Zambales have difficulty letting their children go to school or play sports and games.

KAMAO, an organization founded in Kalayaan College strives to make an impact on the kids of rural communities around the country. KAMAO, the Kalayaan College Athletics Management Organization was founded in May 2014 and is a non-profit school organization that offers competitive and recreational activities in the field of athletics, with the goal of going beyond the walls of its school to share its projects with less fortunate people.

One of the most recent and successful projects that KAMAO has created is “KAMAO on Wheels.” KAMAO on Wheels is a sports clinic program that aims to teach children the value of playing sports such as basketball, volleyball, and classic Filipino games. The sports caravan gives poor children the respite they deserve from their busy lives.

For the past two years, KAMAO conducted two sports programs for the impoverished children of the Montalban relocation site. The first one was a sports clinic that taught the children basketball and volleyball and attempted to instill in them the benefits of team sports such as camaraderie and teamwork. The second program KAMAO held for the children of Montalban was a mini sports-fest where 115 children from the community played fun competitive games like tug-o-war and relays.

This year KAMAO on wheels will bring the sports caravan to the 85 Aeta families in the province of Alao, Botolan, Zambales. The caravan will hold a family day for the Aeta community where they can enjoy playing games. The caravan will also provide food for the families and relief goods that they can bring home. The purpose of this caravan is to help out the community and at the same time give the families a day to enjoy themselves.
