of MAN and NATURE
Junyee
December 7, 2024 – January 11, 2025
In the second installment of Altro Mondo’s ICONS series, we are honored to present the visionary artist Junyee through a brand-new exhibit. of MAN and NATURE explores the intricate relationship between humanity and the natural world, expressed through Junyee’s mastery of wood and other organic materials. With a deep reverence for the environment, Junyee’s works transcend aesthetic appeal to deliver a powerful message of sustainability and interconnectedness.
Junyee’s art reflects his enduring ties to nature, featuring pieces made entirely of wood and its by-products, such as soot, blended with other organic materials. His use of reclaimed or locally sourced wood emphasizes sustainability and draws attention to the critical issues of deforestation and industrialization. By transforming these materials into intricate sculptures of animals, trees, and abstract forms, Junyee conveys the resilience, fragility, and beauty of nature while inviting viewers to consider humanity’s reliance on and impact upon the earth’s resources.
The exhibition offers a contemplative journey, guiding visitors through a spectrum of works that celebrate wood’s versatility as an artistic medium. Each piece symbolizes growth, life, and change, presenting wood not merely as a material but as a living testament to the natural world’s cycles. Soot and other organic elements are incorporated to underscore the interplay between creation and destruction—a reminder of nature’s delicate balance and the consequences of human actions.
At the heart of of MAN and NATURE lies a compelling call to action: to honor, protect, and nurture the environment. Through his art, Junyee challenges us to reflect on our role in the planet’s ongoing narrative, urging a deeper appreciation of the connections that bind humanity to the earth and to one another.
The ICONS Series is an annual exhibition that showcases the work of prominent local artists who have made significant contributions to the art community and the development of Contemporary Philippine Art. The series was inaugurated last year with Series 8: The Muses, a solo exhibition of eight stainless steel and copper wall-bound sculptures by National Artist for Visual Arts, Benedicto “BenCab” Cabrera. His involvement marked a prestigious opening for the series.
