Julia Barretto ‘Outgrows’ Joshua Garcia, Shares Thoughts About His Relationship with Janella

After breaking up with her former love team partner, Joshua Garcia, Julia Barretto can now say that she is finally feeling “free” to pursue different, riskier roles that she never had the chance to do while she was boxed in the romantic comedy genre for three years.

“At this point, feeling ko I’m just very, very grateful that I’ve been trusted with projects that are not the usual that I’ve done before,” she told the press during the media conference for her upcoming digital series I Am U with Tony Labrusca.

“I’m glad na nakakapaglaro na ako (that I am now able to experiment), that I’m more free to do some scenes and some roles and take more risks, that I can now take roles fearlessly, that now I can be the actress that I’ve always wanted to be,” she added.

“I’m very happy to be in the phase in my career na mas mature na ‘yung mga nagagawa ko, mas marami na akong nakakatrabaho. Mas free na ako sa pagpili ng projects. Hindi na ako parang na sa isang box. (I’m very happy to be in the phase in my career that I am doing more mature roles, that I’m working with more people. I’m freer to choose projects. I am no longer confined in a box.) I can now explore as an actress in different genres, and be able to work with different leading men, and different kinds of materials, and different directors.”

When asked whether she has outgrown Joshua as a love team partner, she gave a simple answer: “Yes, definitely.”

However, she said that she is still proud of her former boyfriend for finding success in his new tandem with Janella Salvador.

“Up to this day, watching him from afar… As I always tell him, ‘I’ll always be one of your cheerleaders.’ Wherever he is in his career now, I’m really proud of him, because I’ve seen his growth, and I was there in the beginning of that all,” she shared.

“His choice to still be in that path in his career, which is the love team phase, I respect that,” she added.

Meanwhile, she only had good words to say about Janella, who was her batchmate in Star Magic Circle and a known close friend.

Dati kasi, palagi namin pinag-uusapan ‘yung mga pangarap naming dalawa, ‘yung mga gusto naming maabot, gusto naming ma-experience, ‘yung mga path na gusto namin mapuntahan. Ngayon, just watching her, being able to do these things, proud ako sa kaniya, and pinag-pe-pray ko rin siya,” she said.

(“Before, we would always talk about our dreams, everything we want to accomplish, what we want to experience, all the paths we want to take. Now, just watching her, being able to do these things, I’m proud of her and I also pray for her.”)

But what does Julia think about working with Joshua again in the future?

“I have no problem [with that],” she confessed. “Pero siguro (But I think) that’s in the far future pa (still), because I’m still working on Julia as the individual and Julia as the actress.”
