Joshua Garcia Opens Up For the First Time About ‘Paubaya’ MV: ‘Saktong sakto masyado sa amin’

Joshua Garcia has finally opened up about his thoughts and experience doing the music video for Moira Dela Torre’s newest single “Paubaya,” which has since gone viral because of its heartwrenching dialogue between the fictionalized versions of himself and his ex-girlfriend, Julia Barretto.

Speaking to hosts Kim Chiu and Enchong Dee on ASAP Naton ‘To last Sunday, February 21, Joshua admitted that it was because of his close friendship with Julia, Moira, and Moira’s husband Jason Hernandez that made him agree to be part of the music video.

‘Yung friendship namin nila Moi, nila Kuya Jason, and Julia. ‘Yun ‘yung isa sa nagpa-oo talaga sa akin (My friendship with Moira, Jason, and Julia. That’s one of the reasons why I accepted),” he said.

Si Moi ‘yung nag-ask sa akin eh. Sabi niya, ‘Okay ka ba to do this Paubaya?’ Napakinggan ko yung kanta. Sabi ko, ‘Ang ganda nito ah. Parang saktong sakto masyado sa amin [ni Julia]’ (Moira was the one who asked me. She said, ‘Are you okay with doing Paubaya?’ I listened to the song. I said, ‘This is beautiful. It’s so apt for me and Julia’),” he shared.

He also confirmed that he and Julia had a hand at writing the emotional script.

May script siya, siyempre may guide kung hanggang saan lang kayo. Pero yung sasabihin as an actor, kung saan ka komportable siyempre, kung saan mo mararamdaman (There was a script. Of course, there was a guide, but we were in charge of what to say as an actor, whichever we’re comfortable with saying and based on what we truly felt),” he said.

“Paubaya,” which has accumulated over 19 million views as of writing, is a song about learning to let go of a love that wasn’t meant to last forever, no matter how hard you fight for it. Joshua and Julia star as two characters getting ready for their wedding but who find themselves filled with doubt.

Many of their fans expressed how this video served as the couple’s closure since their highly publicized breakup in 2019. They still remain good friends to this day and have even co-starred in the virtual one-part drama Love Unlock: E-numan last August 2020.
