Johnny Depp’s Next Move After Losing Libel Case

In a recent post on Instagram, Johnny Depp released a statement regarding his resignation from Warner Bros’ Fantastic Beast in accordance with the entertainment company’s request. “I wish to let you know that I have been asked to resign by Warner Bros. from my role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts and I have respected and agreed to that request,” the award-winning Hollywood actor said.

Fantastic Beasts is a series of films inspired by the book “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” Author and producer J.K. Rowling reportedly announced in 2016 that there is going to be five films with the first two released in 2016 (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) and 2018 (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald) respectively. Depp played Gellert Grindelwald in both films.

The third film, which title is yet to be revealed and was earlier announced to be released in 2021, has only started filming last month due to delays brought about by the pandemic. However, Buzzfeed reported that a spokesperson for Warner Bros. confirmed that the role of Grindelwald will be recast and thanked Depp for his work.

Depp then stated his next move after his loss on his libel trial against British tabloid “The Sun” who claimed him to be a “wife-beater” in an article back in 2018. He said, “The surreal judgement of the court in the U.K. will not change my fight, to tell the truth, and I confirm that I plan to appeal. My resolve remains strong and I intend to prove that the allegations against me are false.

In light of recent events, I would like to make the following short statement.

Firstly, I’d like to thank everybody who has gifted me with their support and loyalty.

I have been humbled and moved by your many messages of love and concern, particularly over the last few days.

Secondly, I wish to let you know that I have been asked to resign by Warner Bros. from my role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts and I have respected and agreed to that request.

Finally, I wish to say this.

The surreal judgement of the court in the U.K. will not change my fight to tell the truth and I confirm that I plan to appeal.

My resolve remains strong and I intend to prove that the allegations against me are false. My life and career will not be defined by this moment in time.

Thank you for reading.

Sincerely, Johnny Depp.
