John Lloyd Cruz is going behind the scenes at this year’s Cinemalaya by being the film festival’s official portrait photographer.

Cinemalaya announced the news on social media with a series of photos of the artist and actor at work.

The photos were accompanied by the text, “Every year, nag-iimbita ang Cinemalaya ng photographer para kumuha ng portraits ng mga filmmakers na kasali sa kompetisyon. This year, sa pambihirang pagkakataon, isang aktor ang humawak ng camera para kumuha ng larawan ng mga direktor. Yes, it’s the big swap we didn’t see coming!”

In 2017, Cruz went on an “indefinite leave” from showbiz to attend to personal matters. The same year, he debuted as artist Idan Cruz with a series of works in the 18-man group show Ingress/Egress at Underground Gallery. In 2019, Cruz had his first solo show as a photographer called Void at West Gallery. His debut in art didn’t come as a surprise as he was a fixture at exhibit openings and his circle of artist friends.

Ugh! I don’t get jealous, I can’t be jealous, I’ve never been jealous – ngayon lang!”

“The CINEMALAYA 18 filmmakers were with the actor John Lloyd Cruz for two days to have their portraits taken. Who among the filmmakers got giddy? Ugh! I don’t get jealous, I can’t be jealous, I’ve never been jealous – just today!”

The festival promised that they will be releasing more behind-the-scenes photos with the actor and artist in the coming days. Cruz’s photos will be seen when the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) opens for CINEMALAYA 18: BREAKING THROUGH THE NOISE.

The festival will run from August 5 to October 31, 2022.
