Japanese Government Now Offering Scholarship Opportunities For Filipinos

The Japanese Embassy in Manila is currently accepting scholarship applications from incoming college and graduate students from the Philippines. They are offering tuition subsidies for several fields including social sciences and humanities and natural sciences amongst others. The deadline for applications is on May 31, 2019.

These scholarships fall under the Embassy’s 2020 program, which provides educational assistance in order to further ties with foreign countries and share its culture. The scholarships for incoming college students can be further divided into 3 categories: Undergraduate, Specialized Training College, and College of Technology scholarships. Prerequisites for the scholarships are mainly a good academic standing in the subjects of English, Math, and Science.

Graduate students may apply for the Research Student Scholarship, which requires applications to be in the same field of your undergraduate degree. The basic stipulations are a “clear and feasible research proposal” and good academic standing. The applicant should be under 35 years old. 

Other scholarships on offer are the Japanese Studies Scholarship and the Teacher Training Scholarship. The former requires an undergraduate degree in the field of Japanese Studies while the latter is for individuals currently working as teachers.

All scholarships require the willingness of individuals to learn and study in the Japanese language. You may find further details on the applications here. There are also free scholarship consultations offered at the JICC Library every Friday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
