Kids who grew up in the ’90s are familiar with Space Jam, the Looney Tunes animated feature starring Michael Jordan. It was released 21 years ago but it looks like it’s going to get a sequel!
News of a sequel started brewing last year when The Fast and the Furiousย director Justin Lin was signed on to direct. It was also announced that Lebron James will be starring in a leading role.
However, it seems like it’s not going to be screened soon. In an interview with Slash Film, he said that he’s working on an indie film before Space Jam 2ย and another anticipated film, an adaptation of the Hot Wheels franchise.
He said, “A lot of times now with these big tentpoles, everybodyโs trying to jam a movie in in a limited time. I feel like Iโm too old for that. I want to make sure that we do everything right, so those two projects, with Legendary [onย Hot Wheels]ย and Warner Bros. [onย Space Jam 2] theyโve been great about saying, โWhat do you need, how much time do you need? Letโs keep getting it right.โ”
He adds that he’s getting pressure from groups to start filming. He said, “Iโve been really wanting to push that genre, but to do that you need the right amount of time. So thereโs a logistical challenge but also creatively, to do a sequel 20 years later with a new cast and also to be able to, in a relevant way, bring the Looney Tunes back. Thatโs very important to me to do it right. I feel Iโve done nine different iterations already and weโre going to keep going, but weโre getting closer every day.โ
“Getting closer every day” sounds like good news to us!
