It’s been 12 years since Mamma Mia! premiered in theaters and made us fall in love with the music of ABBA and Meryl Streep’s Donna Sheridan. It has also been two years since we got a surprise sequel, in which we got an amazing backstory of the beloved character who fell in love with three different men and found herself in the process.
So with two films already in existence, are we eventually going to have a third installment?
Here’s the good and bad news.
The good news is that producer Judy Craymer confirmed with The Daily Mail that there were already plans to make Mamma Mia! 3 happen. In fact, she even wanted to feature the four new ABBA songs that the band was supposed to release sometime this year.
The bad news is that because of the current health crisis, she has found it difficult to actually sit down and focus on bringing the third movie to life.
“I was meant to have been getting on with that, in my head, during these months. But then I got hit with COVID fog,” she said. “I think one day there will be another film, because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see. I know Universal would like me to do it.”
If Mamma Mia! 3 does come in the future, it’s definite that we may have to wait a while for it to happen.
