Kalma, it’s okay to not have a date on Valentine’s

During Valentine’s season, there’s always pressure for single people to find a date. It has become so prevalent that even these people question themselves on their status, as if it’s a sin to be alone.

Sure, it’s great to have a date on Valentine’s or any day for that matter. There’s a sense of comfort knowing that there’s always someone you can go out with on a weekend. More importantly, you can share the significant moments of life since you have a partner in all the joys and griefs the universe throws at you.

Fun as it is, there are also benefits to being single. It’s not always about lonely nights. If you have a healthy relationship with your family, a solid circle of friends, and a confident personality, you can rock #alonebutnotlonely this Valentine’s, or any day.

The best perk of not being tied down is that you get to do what you want without having to worry about another person. You can watch whatever movie you want and you don’t have to argue with anyone over what to pick on Netflix. You don’t have to deal with the dreaded question “where do you want to eat?“ because you can choose whatever restaurant you feel like eating in. Of course, you’ll still have to go through these if you’re with friends but somehow, they’re less dramatic compared to experiencing this with a partner.

Another perk is that you get to save money. You don’t need to buy monthsary or anniversary gifts, or spend on frequent dates. As a single person, you’re spared of all gastos, especially during Valentine’s. You’re also spared one big thing if you’re alone on February 14: traffic.

Since you won’t have a date, you can just relax at home, free from the stress of Manila traffic and rising expenses. You can stay in bed with a good book or a good movie. In fact, you don’t even need to shower and dress up for anyone! If you’re feeling social, you can have a Galentine’s date where you celebrate with your gal pals.

What you will have a lot of as a single person is time. Time to hang out with your friends without anyone stopping or even possibly being jealous. And if you’re the type of person who needs permission from a partner before going out, you no longer need to do this. You will also have time for your hobbies, whether it’s basketball, painting, or volunteering.

It’s okay to be single since it gives you the chance to discover yourself and explore the world. By learning to love yourself when you are alone, you are setting the standards of you should be loved and how you should love when you are in a relationship. As RuPaul says in every episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race, “if you can’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?”

Relationships come at the right time and yours will come when you are ready. In the meantime, have fun!
