According to her publicist Adam Kersh, Shelton died of an unidentified blood disorder. She reportedly collapsed after a week of illness.

“There was a previously unknown, underlying condition,” the official statement shared to the press read. “It was not COVID-19. The doctors could not save her. They tried. Hard.”

Shelton is known best for her improvisation approach to filmmaking—wherein she encouraged her actors to improvise and contribute to the scenes—and for being a major figure in the mumblecore genre. She has won multiple film awards in her career.

Apart from movies, she also directed episodes of beloved television shows “Mad Men,” “Fresh Off the Boat,” “Little Fires Everywhere,” and  “The Mindy Project.”

Prior to her death, she and her partner, comedian Marc Maron, had been working on a screenplay for a “domestic dramedy” while under quarantine.

“She was a beautiful, kind, loving, charismatic artist,” Maron said in a statement. “Her spirit was pure joy. She made me happy. I made her happy. We were happy. I made her laugh all the time. We laughed a lot. We were starting a life together. I really can’t believe what is happening.”

“This is a horrendous, sad loss.”
