In a desperate bid to combat the further spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), President Rodrigo Duterte declared enhanced community quarantine for the entire island of Luzon last week.
Based on the guidelines released by the Palace, the enhanced community quarantine has implemented:
- home quarantine in all households
- the suspension of transportation
- the provision for food and essential health services
- the increased presence of uniformed personnel to enforce quarantine procedures
Non-essential travel is now prohibited. Only one person per household is allowed to go out to buy food, medicine, and other supplies.
With work also stopped, many people from the poorest communities are unable to earn. Hence, LGUs and even celebrities have started distributing relief goods or food packs that contain the basics such as rice and a few pieces of canned goods to those who are badly affected by the community quarantine.
In Baguio City, instead of distributing food packs, the Baguio City Veterinary Office – Agricultural Services Division is distributing sustainable relief goods.
It wrote on Facebook:
Repacked vegetables seeds ready for distribution in the barangays for the establishment of “survival gardens”
One commented that they have been doing a survival garden for the past five years. Patrick Earl Neri even shared a photo of their survival garden.
“Survival Garden? No problem. We’ve been cultivating a garden for the past five years. Hehe,” Neri wrote.
