In 1989, Ghostbusters 2 Predicted That the World Will End Today

Do you remember that time when people thought the world would end on December 21, 2012? Do you remember where you were? This writer was in the Bonifacio Global City branch of Fully Booked, sitting on a chair on the third floor, right above where the installation art of a lady painted on book spines would be erected years later. He was selecting his planner for 2013 (He eventually chose one with a beautiful painting by Japanese artist Ando Hiroshige on the cover and inside pages). He felt something funny at the appointed time, then life went on.

So many conspiracy theories of when the world will end have spread online, but we’re still here. But could the end of the world be today? It would be, if we listened to the 1989 movie Ghostbusters II, which predicted the Earth’s demise on February 14, 2016.

In one scene, Dr. Peter Venkman (Bill Murray) interviews the “psychic” Elaine (Chloe Webb) on his TV show The World of the Psychic. She said, “According to my source, the end of the world will be on February 14, in the  year 2016.”

Venkman replies, “Valentine’s Day. Bummer.”

If you’ve made it up to here, then it means that Elaine is a fraud. We’ll be happy to wait for the next psychic to give his or her prediction.
