IKEA just dropped their iconic Swedish Meatball recipe— here’s how to make them

The Swedish brand IKEA is a household name known to many. It’s a furniture and home store set in a maze, where guests need to go through the entire store to pay or get out. Although their branch in the Philippines isn’t set to open until sometime in Pasay next year, many still make it a point to pass by an IKEA store on their trip abroad.

Aside from furniture, plants, and home accessories; one of IKEA’s other highlights includes their food. From hotdogs to Swedish meatballs, there’s no doubt that IKEA’s food is a great way to end a store visit. If you ever find yourself missing their meatballs, the wait is over. They just revealed their secret recipe in the most IKEA way possible: instructions in the form of an assembly manual! It looks exactly like the ones that come with their furniture, but for food.

And get this— it even comes with the recipe for their cream sauce! Here’s how they make their famous meatballs:

IKEA Swedish Meatballs

Meatballs

Ingredients:

  • 500g beef mince
  • 250g pork mince
  • 1 finely chopped onion
  • 1 crushed garlic clove
  • 100g breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 5 Tbsp whole milk
  • a generous dash of salt and pepper

Procedures:

  1. In a bowl, add beef and pork mince, and mix them together using your fingers. Break up any lumps, and then add in the onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, and egg.
  2. Pour in the milk, and season with salt and pepper. Mix everything together until well-combined.
  3. Shape all of the meat into small, round balls and place them onto a clean plate. Cover the plate and store it in the fridge for two hours. This will help the meatballs hold their form when cooking.
  4. In a frying pan, heat your oil on medium heat. Once hot, place your meatballs in and cook them until browned.
  5. Place them in an oven-proof dish, and cook through for 30 more minutes in a pre-heated oven at 180F, or 160F if you have a fan oven.

Cream Sauce

Ingredients:

  • A dash of oil
  • 40g butter
  • 40g flour
  • 150ml vegetable stock
  • 150ml beef stock
  • 150ml thick double cream
  • 2 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard

Procedures:

  1. Melt the butter in a pan then add your flour. Stir with a whisk for two minutes to form a roux.
  2. Add in your vegetable stock and beef stock.
  3. Keep stirring, then add in your thick double cream, soy sauce, and Dijon mustard.
  4. Stir all of the ingredients together, then bring to a simmer.
  5. Once the mixture thickens, pour it over your meatballs. Enjoy!
