Humans of ADMU: What’s the most life changing thing a teacher ever told you or did for you?

“It’s my prof in advertising…Actually, one of the speakers in my advertising class. She told the class that your best take away, once you graduate college, is not necessarily the things you learn in the classroom, but the habits that you form that will make you who you are.”

“I think the most life-changing thing was back when I was in First Year. My English prof, sir Carlo Rivera, because one of our classmates died. Yeah, so heavy, but one of our classmates died and he really went out of his way talaga, like we spent one entire English period just talking about our grief. Oh my god, naiiyak talaga ako no, no, no. And we went to the funeral right after. So he made us realise, how much we love each other. Yeah. ”

“So me during the lit final exam in first year. In my head it was 2 to 4. Kasi chem 2 to 4 rin. But then I went there to the classroom, 12 to 2 pala. So nagulat lahat ng mga classmates ko, so ayun pumunta ako sa classroom and nakita ako ng prof ko, ‘Oh, Miguel, you missed it?’ but yun, he let me take it anyway. Doon English department. I was next to…this is LIT14 by the way, he placed me in the desk next to my former LIT13 prof which was cool because he’s nice. But then I was hearing babies crying in the department. It was nice. So how did that change my life? One, I was able to go to the English department. Inside. It was cool. Two, I realized how lucky I am to have a good prof and that I can’t rely on luck forever.”

“Okay, so in my first year I had this prof that was a huge nerd. He loved games, Lord of the Rings and all that, and the best thing that he did for me was he taught it in class. He showed me that these things are applicable in real life, not just in the classroom, but things that I love, the fandoms that I’m in, they do have an impact on people’s lives.”

“So Math 21 class ko. Calculus class siya. Sobrang hirap ng calculus. Nagkakaroon ako ng panic attack every before Math exam. So kapag nagmamath exam ako, nanginginig ako and naiiyak ako sa kaba. Nung 3rd long test, na feel ko na kailangan ko na ng tulong kasi parang iba na to. Since alam kong mababa yung score ko, nagloveletter ako sa dulo ng papel, na ‘Sir, I’m sorry if ever I get a bad score, kasi nagpapanic attack ako. I hope na maintindihan mo and sana paki-rip nalang yung paper na to kasi alam kong wala naman tong halaga.’ After nun, nung bigayan na ng results, sabi niya basahin ko yung dulo ng paper ko. Nakalagay sa dulo, ‘Dear Sam, hindi biro yung ganitong mga uri ng sakit. Nakakalungkot lang na nakikita ko naman na may potential ka, di mo lang nagagawa kasi may sakit ka. So what I suggest is for you to go to CEPHAM,’ yung parang Psych stuff sa LST. So naluha ako kasi naintindihan ako ng prof ko. After the 4th long test, I went to CEPHAM na. I got help and binigyan ako ng technique to calm myself down. Dahil sa kanya nalaman ko na it’s okay to embrace your problems and that may nakakaintindi rin pala na tao, kahit prof mo.”

“Siguro yung pinakalife-changing na bagay na nasabi ng isang professor saakin ay ‘kaya mo yan,’ kasi minsan kailangan lang natin ng magtitiwala sa atin na kaya nating magawa ang isang bagay para magawa natin talaga.”

For me yung, pinaka memorable na sinabi ng prof ko saakin is ‘The fish knows the ocean, but can never fully grasp it.’ Kasi kung iisipin mo lahat ng bagay na ginagawa mo sa mundo, iniisip mo na lahat na yun pero in reality it’s just a speck of everything that you’ve been doing in life. Kasi yun nga, lahat ng yun dapat ginagawa mo siya with all your heart and all your mind. Di lang dahil napilitan ka or dahil may makukuha out of it. Sabi nga ni Lilla Watson, ‘if you have come to help me then you are wasting your time. But if your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.’ So yun yung, alam mo yung push sayo? Hindi siya dapat nalilimit sa mere result or makukuha mo out of it, but dahil sa colorette na ginagawa niya or advocacy sa ginagawa mong yun. Kahit maliit lng siya na bagay, sobrang life changing niya para sa iba.

“I can’t isolate a specific action, but in just 2 years, I grew more in Ateneo than I did in my entire life. My professors made me realize that I could do so much more than I thought I could.”
