A Call For Responsible Tourism
Reports of a record-breaking heat index and the adverse effects of irresponsible tourism, like the recent fire in Mount Apo, indicate that while millennials are currently enjoying soaking up under the sun in beautiful beaches and climbing the country’s highest peaks, we might be seeing less of the country’s natural wonders in just a few years’ time. This is what inspired Communication Research students from UP Diliman when they launched Project Lingap and partnered with Haribon Foundation to see it come to fruition.
For over 40 years of biodiversity conservation, the Haribon Foundation has been working to protect the places Filipinos and tourists around world enjoy in the Philippines. Biodiversity, or the variety of life on Earth, are integral yet under-appreciated aspects of these destinations.
Have you witnessed trekkers and hikers leave behind garbage and other fire-hazardous items? The Haribon Foundation calls for mountain-lovers to join in on tree plantings at Mt. Banahaw between June and November of this year.
Have you accidentally touched or damaged coral? Coral reefs are crucial habitats for fish species to thrive, not only providing some of the best dive sites in the world, but also a large protein and livelihood source for Filipinos all over the country.
Part of Project Lingap’s campaign towards responsible tourism while promoting biodiversity is an online photo contest that was launched on Haribon’s Facebook page (facebook.com/GoHaribon) on April 23, where all millennials who take travel photos and have a knack for creating witty pickup lines and hugots are encouraged to join.
