For its third year, smartphone manufacturing giant HUAWEI invites visual creatives all over the world to showcase their expertise in the annual HUAWEI NEXT-IMAGE Awards. A panel of world-class photographers, curators, and visual artists will decide which among numerous NEXT-IMAGE finalists makes the absolute best out of their creative eye and smartphone photography skills – all entries submitted before July 31st, at least.

The 2019 HUAWEI NEXT-IMAGE Awards carries a prestige that separates it from other similarly-themed contests out there, seeing over 550,000 entries from over 130 countries in only their third year to date, and with the best ones being featured in a gallery that’s showcased to a global audience.

HUAWEI is well-regarded for its mobile photography innovation, with its flagship smartphones featuring cutting-edge camera technology. The NEXT-IMAGE Awards builds on HUAWEI’s pursuit of the ultimate image-making experience, highlighting the importance of a cultural lens to bring out unique visual expressions using intuitive, professional-level smartphone cameras.

The 2019 HUAWEI NEXT-IMAGE Awards are broken down into six categories: ‘#Emotion Tag’, ‘Hello, Life!’, ‘Faces’, ‘Going the Distance’, ‘Life Now’ and ‘Storyboard’. While three of the categories from 2018 remain, there are three new ones which will add an extra dimension to the Awards this year. They are ‘#Emotion Tag’ which is about expressing instant emotions by means of smartphone photography; ‘Going the Distance’ which is about discovering new places and new experiences by using new features found in a phone camera, especially zoom features; and ‘Life Now’ which is about filming a story in less than 30 seconds.

In the Philippines, numerous contenders have stepped up to the challenge in weekly competitions, with winners already emerging from the Going the Distance category.  Here are the winning local photo entries from the Philippines:

Two of the best entries came from Arniel Alderite and Joana Marie Lazatin. Arniel’s photo depicts a super close-up shot of a purple flower in all its detailed glory. Joana Marie’s entry zooms out to show a lighthouse amid jagged rocks bathed in the pale dusk light. Each entry makes clever use of the zoom features on their respective Huawei phones to either magnify minuscule details or emphasizing distance to capture a certain mood.

The winner of the Going the Distance category, Mac Suganob, bests the other entries with his shot of a sailboat and paddler silhouetted against the majestic orange glow of the setting sun. “I had taken lots of shots before this, but the sunset gave me a different feeling as it was so beautiful, so I waited for the right opportunity,” Mac says of his entry. “My Huawei P20 Pro really captured the feeling I was going for, and I was already satisfied with the result – the award was just the cherry on top.”

There will be one Grand Prize winner who will win US$20,000, the latest HUAWEI P30 Pro smartphone, an opportunity to attend the NEXT IMAGE Awards ceremony at Paris Photo 2019 and a winner’s medal or certificate. Additionally, there will be six best-in-category winners (each winning US$6,000, a HUAWEI P30 Pro smartphone, a medal or certificate, and an opportunity to attend the Awards ceremony) and 50 runner-up prizes (each winning a HUAWEI P30 Pro smartphone).

With five more categories waiting to herald their respective winners, HUAWEI encourages Filipino shutterbugs to up their creative ante and submit their best shots for a chance at the global stage. Capture your moment and capture the world’s attention.
