Asthma is one of the most common diseases in world. It’s also one of those ailments that actually hinder you from reaching your full potential as it can attack in the most unexpected times possible. Having asthma should not be an excuse from living your life to the fullest, though! Celebrities like Kim Chiu, Arnel Pineda and Michael Martinez all have asthma, but are still reaching for their dreams, never stopping from reaching their goals and not letting asthma take over their lives. Take inspiration from these ambassadors of the Win Against Asthma campaign – an advocacy initiated by GlaxoSmithLine (GSK) to raise awareness on asthma and learn how you can win against it!
How to Win Against Asthma – Tips From Kim Chiu, Arnel Pineda and Michael Martinez
1. Understand your condition.
The first thing that you should do is to fully understand what the disease is. If you or someone you know experiences recurring periods of wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and coughing, you’d better check with your doctor because you may be asthmatic. Some causes can be rooted from an inherited tendency to develop allergies called atopy, certain respiratory infections during childhood, parents who have asthma or contact to airborne allergens. Basic information will always do you good.
2. Always bring medication.

Carrying your nebulizer at all times can be a hassle (bulky and too heavy), but an inhaler is a good alternative. Be prepared and take your meds regularly; it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
3. Spread awareness.
Just like GSK’s campaign, let your peers, family and relatives know what asthma is all about, so we can all fight against it. The underlying problem is the uncontrolled handling of asthma, thus resulting to lives sacrificed. Let’s not wait for more people to suffer. Arm yourself with the proper knowledge of asthma and share it, especially with the ones you love.

Aiming to reach more people to be informed about this chronic illness and to recognize young asthmatic achievers in the country, GSK had launched the Search for Winners Against Asthma 2015. This competition will pick 10 successful individuals in their respective fields who, like Kim, Arnel and Michael, have conquered and attained their goals despite being asthmatic.
