A Filipino-made Boy’s Love series just got nominated in an international awards show!
“Gameboys,” which starred Elijah Canlas and Kokoy De Santos, garnered a nomination for the 2021 International Emmy Awards under the kids’ live-action category and is the only Filipino production vying for the award.
The good news was shared by the production house behind “Gameboys,” The IdeaFirst Company, on its social media pages. “Congratulations team Gameboys! International Emmy Awards 2021 nominee for kids – live-action,” it announced.
The show will be going up against entries from Australia, the Netherlands, and Argentina. Winners will be announced in an online presentation on October 12, 2021.
“Gameboys” has achieved both local and international acclaim since it premiered on IdeaFirst’s Youtube channel back in May 2020. Not only was it recognized by Filipinos as one of the best modern BL stories ever made but it was also named Best Web Series in the Indie Shorts Awards in Seoul in November that same year. A Netflix version was then made in December before it went on to be aired on television in June 2021. In July, “Gameboys: The Movie” was made. As of writing, a second season is being worked on but it’s yet to be known when it will be released.
The series was directed by Ivan Andrew Payawal, written by Ash Malanum, and produced by Perci Intalan and Jun Lana. It follows the story of gamer Cai (Canlas) and his fan Gavreel (De Santos) who become much closer through all their Zoom calls and online messages and end up helping each other through their personal struggles.
