Shondaland residents were sad to hear that Scandal‘s seventh season will also be last. But it turns out, showrunner Shonda Rhimes has always planned for the show to have seven seasons.
Channing Dungey, entertainment president at ABC, said, I had conversions with Shonda Rhimes where she has had for a while a sense of how she wanted the story to end.
She said, ‘Look, I really feel like season seven is where I want to wrap up this story, because I always prefer to end a show where you’re feeling on top as opposed to letting things fizzle out.'”
Rhimes also wrote a newsletter for the fans, saying “It had begun to occur to us that — warning, warning: swagger alert — shows written by me don’t seem to… end. But what happens if we let all the shows go on and on without end? What if we just hang on so long that people don’t say WHY are you ending, but WHEN? What if we don’t let anyone say WHEN?”
But fans of Scandal have something to look forward to. According to Rhimes, “next year we are going all out. Leaving nothing on the table. Creating this world in celebration. We are going to handle the end the way we like to handle the important things in our Scandal family: all together, white hats on, Gladiators running full speed over a cliff.”
There’s also new material coming up for Rhimes. Apart from Grey’s Anatomy, How to Get Away with Murder, and The Catch, she will have the much-awaited Still Star-Crossed, an adaptation of a novel by Melissa Taub. The show will premiere on May 29, 2017.
Scandal‘s seventh season will return in September.
